Puzzle toys made of wood are most children’s first puzzles. They come in all shapes and are usually in a wide variety of bright colors. This type of toy will help a young mind to learn how different shapes can be placed together. Not only will your child learn to look at the picture they are making but to look at the edges of the different shapes and match them together.

As a parent I watched my children play with their first wooden puzzles. They would do them over and over again. Each time they would get faster and faster. I was amazed at how fast they would learn. After some time they knew where each piece went as soon as they picked it up. In the beginning they had to think, this is what was fun to watch. I could almost hear the gears turning in their heads as they looked at the puzzle and gazed at the different pieces.

As time went on I would introduce a new puzzle into their arsenal of toys. When given as one of many birthday gifts, I was so happy when the puzzle was picked to be played with first. I could see in their young eyes, a challenge great. In the following years the puzzles got more complicated and were no longer made out of wood, they were made out of cardboard. There were over 1000 piece to most by the time they were 7. This made memorizing the different pieces out of the question. As I would watch them and when they allowed me too, helped them, I could still see the same expression on their faces as when they got their first wooden puzzle toys. That is a look I will never forget.
